Libyan Arab Jamahiriya – Country Programme
The UNIDO Director-General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, undertook a mission to the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya from 4 to 7 December 2006 that was prepared in close cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Libya and Libyan authorities
During a high-level technical meeting held at the Ministry of Industry, the Director-General and his delegation discussed and reviewed with the hosts the
cooperation between UNIDO and Libya. A technical visit was arranged for the delegation during which the General Manager of the Centre, Mr. Abdulhamed Elsharif, made a substantive presentation highlighting objectives, strategies and priorities of the Centre and its impact on industrial development in Libya. With the aim of developing aspects of renewable and hydrogen energy, a solar/ hydrogen energy pilot project was presented as one of the strategic projects. In response, the Libyan authorities requested UNIDO to undertake an assessment of the local and global environment aspects of this project. Upon visiting the Libyan Iron and Steel Company, authorities expressed their thanks to and satisfaction with UNIDO for their involvement in this initiative, as well as the UNIDO involvement in the cement sector.
On the final day of the mission, Mr. Yumkella delivered a statement at the Libyan International Energy Conference that was well received by all participants. He also met with Mr. Bashir Saleh Bashir, President of Libyan African Investment Portfolio, during which they discussed the establishment of an ITPO and a South-South cooperation programme between Libya and regional African countries.
Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella met with several high-level government officials to discuss areas of cooperation. The discussion resulted in an agreement to field a programming mission to formulate a comprehensive country programme.
