Poverty Reduction

The Programme strongly promotes the development of agro-industries in the region, such as food processing, textiles, footwear and shoe manufacturing to assist the countries in upgrading their technological and marginal capabilities, quality of goods and increasing food safety in compliance with international norms and standards. UNIDO has implemented agro-industry projects in the Russian Federation and Romania. Programming activities were undertaken in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

UNIDO implements the regional project on "Healthy and Safe Food for the Future" for Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, funded by the European Commission. In cooperation with UNDP Office in Kosovo, UNIDO has initiated a project on "Enhancing the Implementation of International Quality Management and Food Safety Standards".

In cooperation with Turkey UNIDO organizes international workshops on agro- and food related industries in Turkey every year. The new project initiative on food safety is under development for Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).
