Private Sector: Growth Engine for South-South Cooperation

To harness the energies of the private sector for South-South cooperation, the UNIDO Centre, among other initiatives, will try to:

  • Network India’s apex organizations of commerce and industry with similar associations in other developing countries to provide them with information for trade, investment and technology;
  • Harmonize and expand the African and Latin American outreach initiatives of India’s apex commerce and industry organizations;
  • Encourage Indian enterprises to invest in Africa and Latin America;
  • Encourage finance bodies to provide credit lines and loans to Indian entrepreneurs who export to developing countries;
  • Promote enterprise-to-enterprise deals and exchanges, mainly through the creation of joint ventures and other inter-corporate linkages, for example through the Africa-Asia Business Forum (AABF);
  • Promote the Web of Information for Development (WIDE), an online web-enabled system gathering information on experts and institutions of the South.
Together we can make a Difference

The UNIDO Centre for South-South Industrial Cooperation:

  • Assists in adapting successful policies and practices among developing countries in attracting investment, promoting trade and developing industries;
  • Disseminates best practices among MSMEs thus making them more productive and competitive;
  • Transfers modern and suitable technologies and tailors them to the specific needs and recipient countries;
  • Improves networking among developing countries in investment promotion and industrial development; and
  • Diffuses best practices in South-South trade with export promotion based on international quality standards.

The United Nations General Assembly decided to declare 19 December as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. This was the date on which the General Assembly endorses the Buenos Aires Plan for Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries. The Assembly also urged all relevant United Nations organizations and multilateral institutions to intensify their efforts to effectively mainstream the use of South-South cooperation in the design, formulation and implementation of their regular programmes and to consider increasing allocations of human, technical and financial resources for supporting South-South cooperation initiatives.
