Introduction
In 1992, Methyl bromide (MB) was listed under the Montreal Protocol as a chemical that contributes to the depletion of the earth's ozone layer. It is largely used for soil fumigation but it is also used to a lesser extent for disinfestation of buildings, ships and perishable commodities.
Methyl bromide has been used commercially for more than 50 years to control pests such as:
- Fungi
- Bacteria
- Soil-bourne viruses
- Insects
- Nematodes
- Rodents
Human health concerns associated with Methyl Bromide use include:
- Residue in Food
- Toxicity to humans and associated operator safety and public health
- Detrimental effects on soil biodiversity
- Pollution of surface and ground water

UNIDO Methyl Bromide Phaseout Projects
UNIDO implements two types of projects in the Methyl bromide sector:
- Demonstration Projects - mounted and conducted by local experts (with guidance from international experts) in order to select the most suitable methyl bromide alternatives while taking into account climatic conditions, crops and the mode of operation. These are a significant first step in the transfer of knowledge and the introduction of the alternatives and application methods to the farmers.
- Methyl Bromide Phase-out - Based on the suitable alternative, UNIDO will implement a phase-out project to transfer technology and knowledge to farmers to help them eliminate their dependance on Methyl Bromide.
Project Information
Methyl Bromide phase-out projects implemented by UNIDO involve, among other things:
- the purchase of equipment,
- contracting of consultants,
- organization of farmer training sessions,
- and monitoring of project progress.
Project documents and information for the following countries are available online:
