Global Compact participants quickly identified supply chain management as a key challenge facing companies in global markets. The sheer complexity of many global supply chains presents a major obstacle to the widespread and consistent implementation of the Global Compact principles. How can large transnational companies encourage the adoption of human rights, labour and environmental standards among all of their suppliers? What can local governments do to encourage responsible supply chain management? Where do small companies fit in the global marketplace and how can they develop the necessary skills and capacity, first, to participate in global supply chains, and, second, to do so responsibly? This publication is a first step toward answering these questions and better understanding the distinct challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that seek to implement the Global Compact. |
