The new Permanent Representative of Côte d'Ivoire, Ambassador Youssoufou Bamba, presented his credentials today to Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella..
Mr. Bamba was appointed Ambassador to Austria on 15 September 2006. Immediately prior to that (from 9 August 2001) he was Ambassador of Côte d'Ivoire to the UK. From August 2000 till August 2001 he was Ambassador to the US, with residence in Washington DC.
Ambassador Bamba began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Côte d'Ivoire in January 1976, rising to "chargé de mission" in 1978. In 1980 he was appointed counselor at Côte d'Ivoire's Embassy in Canada, moving in 1982 to the same position at the Mission to the UN in New York. In 1988 he moved back to Abidjan firstly as assistant Director for multilateral cooperation (until 1991) and then as adviser for economic affaris to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In December 1993 he was appointed Ambassador of Côte d'Ivoire to Ethiopia and the Organization of African Unity (OAU), where he stayed until May 1994 when he moved to Tokyo as Ambassador to Japan and the Republic of Korea. During this period (from September 1994 through September 1995), he held the position of Chef de Cabinet of the President of the 49th session of the UN General Assembly in NY. In December 1996, he moved from Tokyo to NY as Ambassador Permanent Representative to the UN. In August 1998, it was back to Abidjan as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of international cooperation. After that, as indicated above, he moved to Washington as Ambassador to the US
The Ambassador has a Master of Arts in Economics and a Diploma from the Institut International d'Administration Publique (IITAP). He is married, with five children.
