UNIDO's focus areas and services

Within UNIDO's endeavor for Climate Change, there are two main focus areas and their inherent services (rural energy is being treated separately):

Energy efficiency

Climate Change has shed a new light on energy issues, including industrial energy consumption: they evolved from a mainly financial and developmental nature into a more global environmental concern.
As such, the issue of promoting the efficient usage of energy, including energy-saving technologies, has gained growing international importance.
Because of policy, financial and technical barriers to the accelerated introduction of energy efficient technologies and measures in industry, UNIDO developed approaches to address these barriers, both at the national and industrial plant levels (top-down and bottom-up) and works primarily in the following service areas:

  • Service 1:  Policy support
  • Support the introduction of energy management standards
  • Develop appropriate guidelines for energy systems used in industry, and
  • Recommend improvements to energy systems used by industry.
  • Service 2: Capacity building and advisory services
  • Transfer of knowledge and skills to national experts, thus enabling them to improve the efficiency of industrial energy systems,
  • Additional financial training to enhance the experts' services and facilitate the promotion of energy efficiency investments,
  • Information sharing and awareness building on financial costs related to the life cycle of equipment, and
  • Assistance in identifying funding for energy efficiency.
Renewable Energy

In view of ever rising energy demands, renewable sources of energy have gained great importance in recent years. Keeping serious environmental threats in mind, UNIDO is implementing a large and diverse portfolio of renewable and rural energy projects in line with its core mandate to promote sustainable industrial development in developing countries.
UNIDOS' approach to promote the use of different renewable energy sources and to remove existing barriers is multi dimensional and covers the following service activities in which UNIDO is currently engaged:

  • Service 1: Technology Demonstration
  • Demonstrate the technical, economical and social feasibility of different renewable energy technologies
  • Facilitate the transfer of knowledge of appropriate energy technology between countries, with a special focus on "south - south cooperation"
  • Service 2: Policy Support
  • Enable a policy environment that helps promoting renewable energies and renewable energy markets
  • Foster voluntary agreements between the industrial sector and national environment enforcement authorities
  • Service 3: Capacity Building
  • Support of capacity building measures for national institutions, public decision makers, local entrepreneurs and industry in the field of renewable energy for rural electrification and productive uses
  • Service 4: Information Dissemination
  • Provide access to databases and disseminates information about renewable energy technologies their application especially in industrial processes and for productive uses in developing countries and countries in transition.
  • Service 5: Global Forum Activities
  • Organization of high level "Global Fora" to bring together experts, institutions and decision makers
  • Organization of fora to discussion of current developments, technologies, lessons learned and best practices in the renewable energy field.
  • Foster"South-South cooperation"

For over a decade, UNIDO has been promoting renewable energy, especially to enhance productive activities for SMEs in rural and off-grid areas. In particular, UNIDO has focused on Bio-Energy, Small Hydropower, Solar Energy and Wind Energy.
