Fourth Nevsky International Ecological Congress
The Fourth Nevsky International Ecological Congress will be held at the Tavricheskiy Palace, St. Petersburg, from 16 to 17 May 2011.
The meeting will be co-hosted by the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. As an official key partner and co-organizer of the congress, UNIDO will emphasize and promote the concept of green industry.
The Nevsky International Ecological Congress was launched in 2008 to address the global environmental challenges and to promote environmental security though strengthening trans-border cooperation and developing environmental legislation in the CIS member nations.
This year UNIDO and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly will hold this event in particular to boost green industry initiatives through east-west and east-east collaboration. It is expected that heads of legislative and executive bodies of CIS countries (President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev; Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin), high-level representatives of the United Nations and other international organizations, and representatives of the government, corporate and academic sectors will take part in the congress. This year around 800 participants are estimated to join the event.
The congress will include two plenary sessions: “The role of Government in strengthening Green Industry” and the “Prospects and role of business in strengthening the Green Industry”and variousround table discussions. The Director-General of UNIDO, Kandeh Yumkella, is expected to participate in the opening ceremony and Plenary Session I.
In addition, two events will be co-coordinated by UNIDO. They include discussions on “Green technologies for environmental protection: promotion of Green Industry initiatives”, and on “Integrated management of water resources: utilization and quality of water”.
The Congress is expected to adopt a Declaration on Green Industry.
UNIDO will also organize:
16 May - a meeting of representatives of National Cleaner Production Centres from the European and Central Asian countries to foster regional cooperation and project implementation;
18 May - an international working group on chemical leasing in cooperation with Vodokanal of St.Petersburg;
19 May - a coordination meeting of UNIDO’s global programme for chemical leasing.
Within the exhibition of the Congress, UNIDO is organizing an information stand on UNIDO’s Green Industry Initiative.
