This year’s edition of the GSSD Expo will be hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held at its Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, from 28 October to 1 November 2013.
The theme of this year’s Expo will be “Building Inclusive Green Economies: South-South Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication”.
About the Expo
Since its inception in 2008, the Global South-South Development (GSSD) Expo has been an annual United Nations high-profile event for South-South Cooperation. It is co-sponsored and participated by more than 25 UN organizations, over 100 UN Member States and a large number of private sector and civil society organizations.
The overall objective of the GSSD Expo is to showcase and exchange pragmatic, replicable and innovative Southern solutions created by developing countries in key areas including Climate Change, Food Security, HIV/AIDS & Global Health, Gender and Decent Work and Social Protection.
In conjunction with this year’s theme ‘Building Inclusive Green Economies: South-South Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication’, the GSSD Expo 2013 will express the collective response of the UN to relevant provisions of the Rio+20 Outcome. The GSSD Expo 2013 will also demonstrate the enhanced role of South-South Cooperation on the pathways towards post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
This year UNIDO will participate in the Solution Forum 2: Clean Technology for Green Industry, and in the High-Level Forum of Director-General for Development Cooperation.
Clean Technologies for Green Industry will showcase various clean technology solutions that have been successfully implemented in developing countries, emphasizing Southern-grown technologies as well as South-South, North-South-South triangular and Public-private Partnerships (PPP) modalities.
As in previous years, the High- Level Forum of Director-General for Development Cooperation will provide a platform for Director-Generals to share experiences, exchange best practices and build new partnerships.
UNIDO plays a pivotal role in giving stimulus to South-South cooperation by bringing forward its expertise and time-tested field experience in support of developing countries. UNIDO strives to engage in the implementation of technical cooperation projects and aims to be an active agent and monitor of South-South cooperation global processes, dynamics and future modalities.
The GSSD Expo 2012
Hosted by UNIDO from 19 to 23 November in Vienna, Austria, the GSSD 2012 Expo brought together more than 750 delegates from over 150 countries to discuss ‘Investing in Energy and Climate Change: Inclusive Partnerships for Sustainable Development’.
The GSSD Expo 2012 created a powerful platform for participants to exchange their knowledge about best practices and innovative solutions found throughout the South and that have significant impact on the ground. To build on this momentum, the Expo successfully launched four pioneering initiatives, such as UNIDO’s Networks for Prosperity and UNOSSC’s South-South Energy Initiative.
