Director General Li shares his vision of UNIDO’s future at first meeting with Secretary General Ban

NEW YORK, 18 September 2013 – LI Yong, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), today met Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and shared his vision for the future of his Organization based on the theme of inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

This was their first meeting since Director General LI was elected as the head of UNIDO in June. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated LI on his election.

The theme of inclusive and sustainable industrial development provides for enhanced partnerships with all relevant development actors and encompasses consideration of both social equity and environmental sustainability. This is instrumental in addressing the challenges of poverty eradication and job creation, said LI.

LI also met with Jan Eliasson, UN Deputy Secretary-General. They discussed, among other topics, ways to achieve sustainable growth, the connection between industrialization and urbanization, UNIDO’s contribution to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the organization’s engagement in the post-2015 development agenda.
