ecoConnect becomes first UK signatory to the Green Industry Platform

LONDON, 15 July 2013 – ecoConnect, a British green industry business network, has become the first UK signatory to the Green Industry Platform, a joint initiative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Green Industry Platform was launched at the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro with the aim of mobilizing action on green industry around the world. Over 150 governments, corporations and civil society organizations have joined to date.

Catherine Hokin, Co-Founder and Executive Director of ecoConnect, said: “At ecoConnect, we believe that advancing the business case for the green economy is a global necessity. The Green Industry Platform provides an excellent working framework for governments, business leaders and investors to not only show real commitment to the development of a low carbon agenda in new and existing industries, but to actually begin to affect the necessary changes in practices and attitudes. UK government ministers and businesses should not be asking why they should join the platform but how soon can they do so.”

Heinz Leuenberger, director of UNIDO’s Environmental Management Branch, welcomed ecoConnect to the Platform and said: “I believe that together with this business network we can help accelerate the move to low-carbon industry and the development of more clean-tech innovation in the United Kingdom.”

ecoConnect and UNIDO will be holding a joint event on 31 October in London to discuss the inherent opportunities and challenges for UK businesses in adopting a green industry approach. Further details will be made available on the ecoConnect and UNIDO websites in the coming weeks.
