BEIRUT, 13 February 2014 – Procurement opportunities for local industries offered by UN humanitarian agencies in Lebanon were discussed at a seminar organized today within the framework of the UNIDO project "Community empowerment and livelihoods enhancement project" and in partnership with UNDP, UNHCR, UNRWA, WFP, and UNICEF.
The seminar, which gathered over 240 representatives from the public and private sectors, was opened by UNIDO Representative in Lebanon, Cristiano Pasini, in the presence of UN Resident Coordinator, Ross Mountain, and the Minister of Industry, Vrej Sabounjian.
“This event demonstrates that UNIDO and other UN interties in Lebanon are ready to assist local industrialists and help them to offset the effects of crisis in Syria and deal with the flow of refugee that affects the country. We are trying to strengthen local sourcing and ensure that the Lebanese economy can benefit from UN procurement to the maximum extent possible,” said UNIDO Representative, Cristiano Pasini.
He added that the event was part of UNIDO’s activities to support and promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Lebanon.
The Minister of Industry and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator thanked UNIDO and other UN agencies for their efforts in helping Lebanese industries.
