First Brazilian company commits to join Green Industry Platform

SAN JOSÉ, 14 June 2013 – The Brazil-based company, Braskem S.A., today announced it will join the UNIDO-UNEP-led Green Industry Platform, becoming the first from that country to do so. The announcement was made during the Middle-Income Countries Conference, hosted by the Government of Costa Rica.

The Green Industry Platform is a global high-level, multi-stakeholder partnership intended to act as a forum to catalyze, mobilize and mainstream action on green industry around the world. It provides a framework to bring together governmental, business and civil society leaders to secure concrete commitments and mobilize action in support of the green industry agenda.

Braskem was represented at the Costa Rica conference by Jorge Soto, the Director of Sustainable Development. Soto expressed the company’s support for the Green Industry Platform and the green industry approach, specifically with regard to resource efficiency and cleaner production.

“The vision and multi-stakeholder approach of the Green Industry Platform is fully in line with Braskem's commitment to sustainable development, which is why I am happy to announce today our decision to sign on to the statement of support,” said Soto.

Braskem is one Brazil’s largest petrochemical companies. It is one of the major producers of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and of polymers from renewable resources in the world. Its decision to join is seen as a positive development for the Platform, which hopes to further extend its partnerships in the region.

Welcoming the announcement, Heinz Leuenberger, Director of UNIDO’s Environmental Management Branch, said: “We look forward to the active involvement of Braskem, and to the concrete projects and collaborations that will come out of the partnership.”

During the roundtable discussion on green industry in San José, participants underlined the need for a rapid transition to a resource-efficient manufacturing model and welcomed the potential of the Green Industry Platform as a framework to bring together all the main partners, including from middle-income countries.
