VERONA, Italy, 11 May 2014 – With the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), representatives from 32 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) working to rebuild Iraq were able to attend the international fair specialized in earth-moving machineries and equipment that concluded today in the Italian city of Verona.
The 29th edition of the International Triennial Earth-Moving and Building Machinery Exhibition, SAMOTER, held from 8 to 11 May, was attended by the world’s leading enterprises in the field.
This is the second consecutive year that UNIDO has supported Iraqi companies from the housing, real estate, infrastructure and industrial rehabilitation sectors to attend this fair.
Since 2007, as part of a programme to promote investment in Iraq, UNIDO has been working to develop a network of four Enterprise Development Centres in the country, namely in Baghdad, Erbil, Nasiriya and Basra.
Staffed with qualified experts in the different sectors, these centres are able to provide local SMEs with services such as training, business counseling and mentoring, financial linkages and investment promotion.
By attending SAMOTER, the beneficiaries of the centres were exposed to state-of-the-art technology and networked with international companies looking to set up business partnerships.
Previous initiatives to link local enterprises with international investors and technology providers have brought Iraqi companies to SIGEP, an agro-food fair held in Rimini, Italy in January 2014, and to MidEst 2013, an international industrial subcontracting fair held in Paris in November 2013.
