New network to expand resource-efficient and cleaner production in Asia and the Pacific
HANOI, 16 April 2013 – Representatives of non-governmental organizations and the United Nations system met today to discuss the future of a new network that will expand resource-efficient and cleaner production in Asia and the Pacific.
The network will connect the region’s National Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs) that have been established in countries across the world by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to foster environmentally sound production.
The first step in the creation of the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Network (RECPnet) will be the implementation of an effective knowledge management system, aiming to strengthen and update the knowledge and the skills of the member institutions, capture and disseminate best practice information and knowledge of resource efficient and cleaner production (RECP) concepts, and ensure higher quality in RECP services.
This system, based on a platform of validated sources of information and documents, will bring a number of benefits for the member institutions, which will be able to access, among other things, training kits and materials developed by UNIDO and other NCPCs, information on experts and organizations, and support for the promotion of joint projects.
“Member institutions will use the new knowledge management system to share best practices and keep up-to-date on technical developments,” explained Heinz Leuenberger, Director of UNIDO’s Environmental Management Branch.
“This will multiply the impact of the existing NCPCs, since it will promote the timely exchange of effective tools,” he added.
It is anticipated that the RECPnet will help to develop sustainable businesses and raise awareness about cleaner production as a main driver of green growth.
During the two-day event, officials are working to identify the network’s initial thematic priorities and its modus operandi.
