Supporting women’s cooperatives in Lebanon

BEIRUT, 12 December 2013 – Challenges facing Lebanese women’s cooperatives in marketing  products and ways of overcoming them were discussed at a workshop organized today within the framework of a UNIDO project that focuses empowering communities and livelihoods.  

The Minister of Agriculture, Hussein El Hajj Hassan, who took part in the event together with the Head of the Italian Cooperation for Development, Guido Benevento, expressed his gratitude for the project and for UNIDO’s commitment to sustaine Lebanese efforts towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

The workshop was followed by an exhibition of products produced by women’s cooperatives.

“Empowering Lebanese women entrepreneurship in rural communities has a significant impact on sustained economic growth and sustainable industrial development. This is one of the main drivers of poverty reduction and social integration,” said UNIDO Representative, Cristiano Pasini.

The workshop and exhibition are part of a UNIDO project in the country aimed at enhancing agro-industrial enterprises in Lebanon and supporting rural communities. Initiated upon the request of the Government of Lebanon and with financial support from the Government of Italy, the project is implemented in partnership with the Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU) and in coordination with the Ministries of Industry and Agriculture.
