Switzerland funds UNIDO programme to boost Indonesian fisheries sector

JAKARTA, 11 February 2014 – A new technical assistance programme aiming to increase Indonesia’s trade capacity in selected value chains within the fisheries sector was launched today in Jakarta.

The four-year programme with a total budget of USD 4.5 million will be funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The programme was launched by Saut Parulian Hutagalung, Director General for Fisheries Products Processing and Marketing at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries; Jürg Schneider, Head of Economic Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Indonesia, and Shadia Hajarabi, UNIDO Representative in Indonesia.

“Our funding for this programme is part of the Government of Switzerland’s support for Indonesia’s efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive growth, enhanced competitiveness and value added at a crucial time for its economic take-off,” said Schneider.

The fisheries programme will support the institutionalization of a public-private sector dialogue in selected value chains, and help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to improve product quality and compliance with the mandatory and voluntary standards required by international markets. It will also develop a master’s degree course focusing on productivity and innovation for the fisheries sector, establish a traceability system for fisheries and other maritime products in selected value chains, build certification capacities for sustainability schemes, and support Indonesian fisheries exports in key markets.

“The programme will support Indonesia’s capacity to trade in fisheries by improving business support services available to the sector and by developing international market linkages for the country's sustainable high quality fisheries products,” said UNIDO’s Hajarabi.
