UNIDO Director General visits Kyrgyzstan, stresses support for country’s industrial development goals

BISHKEK, 30 April 2014 – During his official visit to Kyrgyzstan that ended today, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), LI Yong, discussed with President Atambayev and high-level government officials ways to further strengthen existing cooperation, and emphasized UNIDO’s commitment to continue supporting Kyrgyzstan’s industrial development efforts. 
 
President Almazbek Atambayev expressed confidence that cooperation with UNIDO will provide strong contribution to the sustainable economic growth in Kyrgyzstan. Stressing the importance of the UNIDO project “Feasibility study for the establishment of a fruit and vegetable supply chain logistical support” for strengthening the agro-processing industry”, the President expressed hope that it will not only stimulate the development of the sector, but will boost the export of this industry.

Kyrgyz government officials noted that UNIDO technical cooperation services will be instrumental to achieving the goals of the National Strategy on Sustainable Development of Kyrgyzstan for 2013-2017.

Director General Li stressed the importance of inclusive and sustainable industrial development for poverty eradication and job creation, and noted that this approach had strong links with Kyrgyzstan’s development priorities set out in the National Strategy on Sustainable Development of Kyrgyzstan for 2013-2017.
 
Prime Minister Dzhoomart Otorbaev expressed appreciation for UNIDO’s activities in the country and highlighted potential areas for future cooperation, including in the field of organic food production and food processing, the development of green tourism and small and medium enterprises, as well as in quality standards and certification for market access, and small hydro power.
 
The expansion of UNIDO services was discussed during Director General Li’s meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Erlan Adbyldaev; Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Asylbek Zheenbekov; and Deputy Minister of Energy and Industry; Kanatbek Muratbekov.

Kyrgyz officials requested UNIDO to support the promotion of manufacturing and agro-processing industries, build national capacities for increased access to global markets, help create sustainable jobs in rural areas, assist in the development of SMEs, and develop small hydropower stations. It was proposed also that UNIDO considers initiating a project on establishment of centre for renewable energy in the Kyrgyz Republic.

UNIDO’s assistance could also be used to develop a feasibility study for establishing a “technopolis” focusing on the textile industry, and national legislation on industrial zones.

Vice Prime Minister for Economy and Investment, Valeri Dil, suggested that UNIDO considers Kyrgyzstan as a pilot country for designing a holistic industrialization programme.
