GUATEMALA CITY, 16 May 2016 – Guatemala today established the 10th July as the National Day of Cleaner Production in order to further promote the implementation of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP). This was an initiative of the country's Cleaner Production Coordination Committee.
Since 1999, UNIDO has been promoting and implementing RECP principles and methodologies through the Guatemalan Cleaner Production Centre, which was established through a public-private partnership.
“This is the first time a Latin American country establishes a national day for cleaner production. It is a manifestation of Guatemala’s commitment to low-emission economic development and inclusive and sustainable industrial development,” said Smail Alhilali, UNIDO project manager.
On the 10th July 2016, the Cleaner Production Department of the Ministry of Environment and the Guatemalan Cleaner Production Centre will organize a series of events. Visits to enterprises and industries which have successfully implemented cleaner production will be filmed and broadcasted on the internet. Several Universities will also organize events to introduce the RECP concept to students.
The RECP programme was initiated 20 years ago by UNIDO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). To date, the RECP network (RECPnet) has been established in 64 countries, and consists of 74 cleaner production centres, with 16 of them in Latin America.
In 2003, the Regional Cleaner Production Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean was launched in Havana, Cuba. The programme aims to enhance cooperation and joint initiatives in the region, facilitate access to information and knowledge transfer, and increase the development of RECP regional projects.
