IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN INDUSTRY PROJECT
What has been the situation?
The Energy Efficiency Law entered into force in Turkey in May 2007. The mentioned law aims to create an adequate institutional framework for supporting energy efficiency measures, including the EE Coordination Board, authorized institutions and energy efficiency consulting companies (EECCs). Different institutions, such as EIE, Chambers of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Small and Medium Industry Development Organization (KOSGEB) and Organized Industrial Zones (OIZs) are involved in this framework. Training, audit, consultancy and monitoring activities and other specific support and incentives for energy efficiency projects are regulated by this law as well. Most regulations (secondary legislation) under the law are expected to enter into force by May 2008.
The Energy Efficiency Law at the industry side is mainly concentrating on training, promoting energy service market through EECCs, promoting energy management in industry, providing incentives for energy efficiency projects and promoting R&D activities in energy efficiency area. The EIE, which is the responsible unit for the implementation of the EE Law, has planned and has started several activities to meet these requirements.
What is our mission?
The objective of the project is to demonstrate and enable companies in the industrial sector to adopt and use energy conservation measures and energy efficient technologies, so that energy efficiency in Turkish industry is improved. The project aims to enhance and accelerate the impact of the activities planned by the EIE for the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Law and is building on the cooperation with the other parties indicated in the Law. This will be achieved through:
- Strengthening the policy and institutional framework to support energy efficiency
- Enhancing the awareness and capacity of the Turkish industry and private energy service providers to initiate and implement measures for improving the efficiency of industrial energy use
- Demonstrating the state of the art energy management practices and different energy saving measures, business and financing models
- Promoting the sustainability of the project results, including the required monitoring and evaluation for adaptive management
Who are our partners?
UNDP and UNIDO are the implementing agencies of the project. The project will be executed by General Directorate of Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EİE) and Technology Development Foundation of Turkey (TTGV). The other partners will be Ministry of Industry and Trade and Small and Medium Industry Development Organization (KOSGEB). This project is financially suported by Global Environment Facility (GEF).
