    Mr. LI Yong, Director General, UNIDO

    Mr. LI drew attention to UNIDO’s achievements during 2017, including highlights of the first annual “BRIDGE for Cities” event, and shared UNIDO’s vision for the inclusive and sustainable industrial development of cities along the Belt and Road, following UNIDO’s signing of an MoU with the Government of China on the occasion of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in May 2017.

    Mr. WANG highlighted the potential of economic and social growth for BRI participating countries. Mr. WANG urged all nations to join hands for the implementation of this Initiative, which aims to benefit not only those countries situated along the Belt and Road route, but other nations as well through the creation platforms for interconnection and cooperation.

    Mr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Senior Vice-President, World Bank Group

    Mr. Mohieldin echoed Mr. Fischer’s sentiment by highlighting the BRI’s potential to impact millions of lives around the world. He emphasized the challenge of overcoming urban-financing uncertainties and underscored the importance of partnerships in overcoming these bottlenecks, in concert with international organizations, like UNIDO and the World Bank, and municipal leaders.

    Mr. WU Zhong presented the BRI as one of the largest operational models of South-South cooperation in action today and emphasized UNIDO and the Finance Center’s strategic partnership, as joint organizers of the “BRIDGE for Cities” event.

    Memorandum of Understanding between UNIDO and FCSSC

    Following the opening ceremony, UNIDO and FCSSC signed a Memorandum of Understanding and publically declared their intention to strengthen cooperation, including through the joint organization of the annual BRIDGE for Cities event for the next three years (2018-2020).

  • GLOBAL GOALS FOR LOCAL IMPACT: STRENGTHENING POLICY COORDINATION FOR THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF DEVELOPMENT GOALS

    Session 1 focused on the first pillar of the Belt and Road Initiative – policy coordination – and its potential to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. More specifically, it examined the effect of policy coordination on inclusive and sustainable industrial development at the city-level, and the ways in which industrial development interacts with and supports urban development. In this respect, panellists underlined the need for cooperative mechanisms and partnerships to overcome the detrimental effects of rapid urbanization in the coming decades.

    Session 2 focused on partnerships for urban and industrial development and their role in supporting synergies between city development and industry, including their capacity to enhance the promotion of small- and medium-sized enterprises, to encourage the adoption of renewable energy technologies, and to boost technology transfer. Strong partnerships can guarantee sustainable social, environmental and financial returns.
