The Africa Industrialization Day (AID) offers a global platform for the international community to strengthen cooperation on the pan-African industrialization agenda, and to reiterate the commitment to the African region’s economic development.

This year, the theme of AID 2019 is “Positioning African Industry to Supply the AfCFTA Market”, offering to contribute to better positioning of African industries by exposing opportunities proposed by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) through collaboration among and joint commitment of African leaders and various development partners on advancing economic growth in African countries by strengthening regional integration and interconnection, improve trade policy convergence, enhance competitiveness and more diversified exports to contribute to greater prosperity of African nations.

Additionally, the event takes due consideration of UNIDO’s GEEW policy and ensures that gender balance is respected in the choice of panelists participating in the discussions of the event, as well as in the AID 2019 events organized by UNIDO Field Offices.

  • Objectives of the AID are to raise awareness on the challenges and opportunities for Africa’s industrialization within the framework of implementation of the Agreement establishing the AfCFTA. The framework involves sharing innovative solutions and good practices, notably, to promote sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, gender equality and structural transformation of the State Parties, as well as promoting the role that women play in Africa’s industrialization. Aligning with UNIDO’s mandates on ISID and the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III), the framework will be highlighted through raising awareness, various campaigns, identifying potential partnerships and sponsorships, and thematic panel discussions which are expected to contribute in forging partnerships and promoting the necessary linkages to develop joint initiatives with high developmental impact, including the mobilization of resources for the implementation of IDDA III.

Staying aligned with other organized events, the Regional Division – Africa (PTC/PPF/AFR) liaises with the UNIDO Field Offices worldwide to monitor the implementation of the agreements and overall view of the celebration.

  • The AID 2019 is expected to serve as a platform to demonstrate and set forth the outcomes of the High-level Side Event on IDDA III at the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly held on 25 September 2019, particularly the Joint Roadmap for the implementation of IDDA III which was further discussed towards validation during the Workshop for IDDA III Focal Points, held on 23-24 July in Geneva, Switzerland.

The AID 2019 event, taking place at UNIDO’s Headquarters in Vienna, is jointly organized by UNIDO, the UN Economic Commission of Africa (UNECA), and the African Union Commission (AUC).
