Market access facilitation for selected value chains of typical food products
The UNIDO-SECO project in Tunisia entitled Projet d’accès aux marchés des produits agroalimentaires et de terroir (PAMPAT) aims at improving the performance, market access and socio-economic conditions of the Harissa, Djebba figue and the cactus/prickle-pears value chains. The project will contribute to the implementation of the country’s fruits and vegetables export strategy launched in 2011 as well as to the overall national agro-food development programme, thus benefiting one of the most important economic sector in terms of employment and GDP.
The project has been developed through a participatory approach process involving the main actors of the value chains selected and on the basis of the official requests of assistance formulated by the Tunisian Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Agriculture. The project, with an estimated budget of 5 million Swiss francs, will be implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization with funding from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Swiss Government. Project activities started in 2013.
The project will strengthen the organization and governance of the selected value chains and their micro and small and medium enterprises to improve productivity, quality compliance and production, thus improving their position in both domestic and export markets. By complying with the requirements of the recently introduced quality labels and geographical indications, products will be positioned in higher niche markets that will increase the revenues and employment opportunities in the three value chains. Special attention will be placed on supporting young entrepreneurs, women and producers from disadvantaged regions.
A twin project, also financed by SECO, will be implemented in Morocco, where the Argan Oil and the cactus/ prickle-pears value chains of Ait Bâamrane have been selected.
