ST. PETERSBURG, 19 June 2015 – Director General Li met Sergey Vasiliev, Deputy Chairman of the Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs (Vnesheconombank). They discussed the potential to establish cooperation in order to enhance business partnerships between BRICS countries and to exploit potential synergies between them in selected areas of innovation and new technologies. Li noted that the BRICS Technology Platform developed under a UNIDO Project will provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with access to state-of-the-art technologies and help identify potential partners. He said that UNIDO is interest in continued and enhanced partnership with Vnesheconombank both on BRICS and on other projects.

ST. PETERSBURG, 19 June 2015 – Director General Li's meeting with Vladimir Yakunin, President of JSC Russian Railways, was devoted to the implementation of UNIDO’s project on environmentally sound management and the final disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on the Russian rail network, as well as potential projects on alternative energy. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress made in this respect. It was emphasized that an inventory of PCBs will be the first major step in the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Russian Federation.

BEIJING, 15 June 2015 - The Director General made the opening remarks at the 2015 International Food Safety Forum taking place in Beijing, China.
BEIJING, 12 June 2015 - The Director General met with BI Jingquan, Minister of China Food and Drugs Administration (CFDA). The Minister expressed his confidence in the expertise of UNIDO to support CFDA in its efforts to implement its mandate on food quality and safety standards, compliance monitoring and enforcement. In this respect a memorandum of understanding was signed between CFDA and UNIDO. The Director General expressed his appreciation to the Minister for his confidence, and assured him of UNIDO’s efforts in promoting food safety in China.
BEIJING, 12 June 2015 - The Director General met with MIAO Wei, Minister for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China. The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the current cooperation between MIIT and UNIDO, in the areas of green industry, new and renewable energy, industrial parks, SME development, and said that he looked forward to further strengthen this cooperation. Miao also briefed the Director General on China’s Manufacturing 2025, a ten-year Action Plan aiming at elevating China to the level of advanced manufacturing economies. The Director General expressed his gratitude to the Minister for his support and for co-hosting the 2013 Green Industry Conference in Guangzhou, China. The Director General re-affirmed UNIDO’s readiness to cooperate with the Ministry in industrial capacity-building, green industry, renewable energy development, green manufacturing and advanced vehicle technologies.
BEIJING, 11 June 2015 - The Director General met with LOU Jiwei, Minister of Finance. He briefed Lou on UNIDO’s new mandate, inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID), and its pilot country programme implemented in Ethiopia and Senegal. He emphasized the importance of industrialization to sustainable economic development and social well-being and equity. He also confirmed UNIDO’s participation in the forthcoming China Food and Drug Administration International Food Safety Forum to be held in Beijing on 15 June. He said that food safety is a priority development agenda for China and that UNIDO stands ready to extend full support to the food safety programme in China. Lou expressed his support to UNIDO and to the Director General in the implementation of the new mandate. He expressed interest in participating in the third ISID Forum which will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 14 July, 2015.
BEIJING, 11 June 2015 - Today the Director General met with LI Xiaolin, President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The meeting provided the opportunity for LI Xiaolin to share with the Director General the activities and programmes of the Friendship Association, especially the Sister Cities programmes, cultural exchanges and activities, women empowerment through skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development. The Director General briefed her on UNIDO’s new mandate, inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID), its pilot country programme implemented in Ethiopia and Senegal, and the Strategic Cooperation Framework that was recently signed by the Government of China UNIDO and fcuses on green industry and food safety.
BEIJING, 10 June 2015 - Today the Director General met with Alain Noudéhou, United Nations Resident Coordinator and other members of the United Nations Country Team in China. The Director General briefed them on the objectives of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) as the new mandate of UNIDO and also shared the experiences of implementing ISID in the pilot countries, Ethiopia and Senegal. He confirmed to further strengthen UNIDO’s engagement with United Nations agencies through innovative cooperation arrangements and assured that UNIDO’s readiness to cooperate with sister United Nations agencies in implementing the Strategic Cooperation Framework (SCF), which focuses on promoting food safety and development of green industry.

ABU DHABI, 2 June 2015 - The Director General met Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development, and Head of Committee for the Coordination of Humanitarian Foreign Aid. Li underlined the UAE’s leadership regarding the recent economic advances and the rise of the country’s industrial base. The Minister expressed her intention to enhance collaboration with UN agencies in relation to international development goals, such as poverty eradication through sustainable development, energy and environment programmes and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The enhancement of technical cooperation between UNIDO and the UAE was also discussed, as well as potential partnership programmes to strengthen industrial and social development worldwide.

He expressed his contentment in organizing the Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit (GMIS) and conveyed his appreciation for the work undertaken by UNIDO. Mission to Poland
Director General LI Yong visited Poland on 6 May 2015 to position UNIDO as a key provider of ISID services in addressing development challenges and to discuss strategic aspects of cooperation and partnerships between UNIDO and Poland.
WARSAW, 6 May 2015 - Director General Li met Marcin Korolec, Secretary of State, Government Plenipotentiary for Climate Policy. He thanked Korolec for his valuable contribution to the UNIDO Green Industry Platform as a member of the advisory board and his participation in several Vienna Energy forums, including the upcoming VEF 2015, which will take place from 18 to 20 June 2015. Korolec underlined that Poland is ready to share its experiences with other countries through UNIDO platforms.

Piechocinski briefed the Director General on recent economic achievements of Poland as well as on the strategy and lessons learned in the process of industrial transformation. WARSAW, 6 May 2015 - The Director General spoke at the seminar organized for Polish companies “Clear understanding of public procurement in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) – business opportunities for Polish entrepreneurs” hosted by the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development. In his speech, the DG mentioned that expertise and leadership of the Polish private sector can be leveraged in a partnership with UNIDO for the benefit of technical cooperation projects both in the region and globally. He further reiterated that Poland is an important partner for UNIDO and expressed confidence that the seminar contributes to strengthening cooperation with Polish private sector, thus making an important contribution to moving the industrial development agenda forward.
Mission to Turkmenistan
Director General Li visited Turkmenistan from 4 to 5 May 2015 to hold bilateral meetings with high-level officials to promote and position UNIDO as a key provider of ISID services in the country. It was the first official visit of a UNIDO Director General to the country, which presented an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about UNIDO and its work. Li engaged in a fruitful exchange of views and insights with high-level Government officials and academia on ways to strengthen cooperation.
ASHGABAT, 4 May 2015 - The Director General also visited the Technology Park, Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. During the discussions with the administrative and academic representatives, the Director General noted that the park is multidisciplinary, combining scientific-research and education institutions and other facilities, and underlined that ensuring the link between knowledge and economy is at the heart of innovation-based economic growth.

The Director General visited Azerbaijan from 2 to 3 May 2015 to participate in the 48th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank. During his visit, the Director General held bilateral meetings with high-level officials to review the cooperation between UNIDO and the Government of Azerbaijan, and to explore avenues for developing further joint activities.
BAKU, 2 May 2015 - Director General Li held a meeting with Takehiko Nakao, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He introduced the encouraging progress made on incorporating ISID into the post-2015 sustainable development agenda and the implementation of UNIDO’s first two pilot Programmes for Country Partnerships (PCPs) in Ethiopia and Senegal. Nakao expressed great interest in partnering with UNIDO based on a strong foundation laid out recently.
BAKU, 2 May 2015 - Director General Li held a meeting with Akim Badalov, Director of the State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources of Azerbaijan. The Director General welcomed the fact that Azerbaijan pays priority attention to improving the economic structure through diversification and development of the non-oil industry, aiming to expand opportunities to use alternative and renewable energy sources. Akim said Azerbaijan strives to develop the agrarian sector and seeks to strengthen food security and to improve the foreign trade and investment structure, as spelled out in the overarching national development strategy “Azerbaijan- 2020: Look into the Future”.
BAKU, 2 May 2015 - Director General Li held a meeting with Huseyngulu Baghirov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan. The discussions focused on strategic aspects of cooperation and partnerships between UNIDO and the governmental institutions in such areas as development of high-tech industrial parks, economic diversification and development of the non-oil sector, environment and energy, SMEs development and others. They both expressed hope that the “Framework Programme on Cooperation (FPC) between UNIDO and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2014-2018)”, signed in 2014 and approved by the President of Azerbaijan in 2015, will further help expand bilateral technical cooperation in the thematic areas prioritized by the Government.

MINSK, 22 April 2015 - Director General Li attended the opening of the 21st International Exhibition on Telecommunications, Information and Banking Technologies (TIBO) held in Minsk. He met with the Prime Minister of Belarus, Andrei Kobyakov, who proposed that UNIDO develops an interregional project to support the formation of partnerships and schemes for interaction between middle income countries (MICs) in order to assist them in overcoming middle income trap. He said that his country was ready to take a lead among middle-income countries, when it comes to promoting innovative industries and technologies and in hosting international fora events in cooperation with UNIDO in thematic areas of relevance for MICs. He participated as a panellist in an interactive panel discussion on “Towards more coherent support for a post-2015 development agenda”.
