ADA event - Innovation as a global goal
VIENNA, 29 April 2016 – Director General Li took part in an expert discussion during an event organized by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). Titled "Get active - Innovation as a global goal", the event invited experts from both UN organizations and the private sector to share their views on how best to tackle the challenge of translating theory into practice when it comes to promoting innovative practices that help to fulfill development goals and at the same time fit sound business practices. Speaking at the event, the Director General said that "technology transfer is important for innovation and for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.

Signing of memorandum of understanding with FAO
VIENNA, 26 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong and José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of FAO, signed a memorandum of understanding which outlined potential joint activities in such areas as agro-based industrial processing and value-adding activities, including in fisheries and forestry; investment promotion and facilitation of private sector investment for developing agricultural value chains, and technical assistance services in coordination with public and private investors. Other joint activities are foreseen in the field of commercially competitive bio-fuels that are based on harvesting waste, residues, recycled or unutilized products from agriculture, fisheries and forestry. UNIDO and FAO will also support countries in post-crisis rehabilitation, as well as trade and food safety capacity-building.

Mission to New York
During his mission to New York, the Director General participated in the High-level Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Signature Ceremony for the Paris Agreement, as well as a number of other events.
NEW YORK, 22 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong is in New York supporting the signing of the Paris Agreement, which was adopted by all 196 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP21 in Paris on 12 December 2015. In the agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and given the grave risks, to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius. Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and provides a roadmap for climate actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience. The Signing Ceremony marks the first step toward ensuring that the Agreement enters into legal force as quickly as possible.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong met with Rachel Kyte, Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All), a global initiative led by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon to achieve universal energy access, improve energy efficiency, and increase the use of renewable energy.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – In an interactive discussion on “Technology and data for the SDGs”, Director General Li, together with other panellists, discussed ways to harness technology and data for the achievement of the SDGs. In particular, they highlighted using the Technology Facilitation Mechanism established at the UN Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong participated in the Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Consumption and Production for the Sustainable Development Goals. The event was co-hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Economic Forum. It aimed to highlight the added value of actions to achieve targets related to Goal 12 -Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – In a joint event by the UN Global Compact and the Business and Sustainable Development Commission on “How to make a powerful business case to achieve sustainable development”, the Director General shared UNIDO’s view that working together across sectors and industries in a new and more effective way can contribute to transformative outcomes in economic development, environmental and social sustainability, and inclusive growth.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – Director General Li participated in the opening ceremony of the High-level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The event aimed to significantly increase international awareness and political momentum around the implementation of the SDGs. It brought together global political, business and civil society leaders in New York to focus on kick-starting the implementation of SDGs. It was also a unique opportunity to address the synergy between the COP21 outcome and the 2030 Agenda. Leaders were offered a platform to catalyze action, discuss concrete steps forward and mobilize potential implementation partners.
Mission to China： G20 Sherpa meeting and meetings in Beijing
BEIJING, 11 April 2016 – LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO, held a meeting with NING Jizhe, Commissioner at the National Bureau of Statistics. The Director General congratulated him as the new commissioner and briefed him on UNIDO's mandate which focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrial development, as well as the implementation of the Programme for Country Partnership (PCPs). Ning expressed his Bureau's interest and readiness to explore potential cooperation with UNIDO such as developing statistics capacity-building projects in the Least Developed Countries and personnel exchange programme under the framework of South-South cooperation.
BEIJING, 11 April 2016 – LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO, had a meeting with WANG Shouwen, Vice Minister of Commerce. The Director General briefed him on the second G20 Sherpa meeting he attended in Guangzhou from 6 to 8 April 2016 and thanked him for the support of the Minister of Commerce to the Ethiopia slaughter waste management project.
GUANGZHOU, 7 April 2016 – The Director General participated in the second G20 Sherpa Meeting held in Guangzhou, China.The Director General delivered a speech on the 2030 Agenda and the pivotal issues for sustainable and inclusive economic growth, including innovation. He also presented UNIDO's draft report on industrialization in Africa and the Least Developed Countries.
