ULSAN, Republic of Korea, 28 June 2016 – Director General Li and Oh Yeon-cheon, President of the University of Ulsan, signed a joint declaration on the occasion of the fourth Green Industry Conference, hosted by the Republic of Korea from 28 to 30 June 2016. The two entities agree to enhance their cooperation in the area of inclusive and sustainable industrial development, with a particular focus on eco-industrial park development and eco-friendly urbanization.

Cameroon Country Programme Discussion
VIENNA, 22 June 2016 - Director General Li met Serge Laurent Ngoa Etoundi, the Minister of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Social Economy and Handicrafts of Cameroon. They discussed the cooperation between UNIDO and Cameroon under the framework of the Country Programme (2016-2020) which is expected to be signed later this year. The programme will support the implementation of Cameroon’s national strategy for growth and employment, as well as the country’s focus on inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The Minister highlighted the role of UNIDO and the United Nations in general in supporting developing countries in reaching prosperity. He also stressed the central role of industry in the development of a vibrant private sector and in achieving shared sustainable growth.
Event: Climate neutrality of the VIC
VIENNA, 21 June 2016 – Representatives of CTBTO, IAEA, and the Austrian Government, as well as UNIDO Director General LI Yong; and the executive head of the UN Office in Vienna, Yury Fedotov, take part in an event marking the fact that the Vienna International Centre (VIC), became climate neutral. After implementing comprehensive ‘greening’ measures, including energy efficiency upgrades, and switching to 100 per cent renewable electricity, the Vienna International Centre, one of the largest United Nations compounds, has become climate neutral.

BRUSSELS, 16 June 2016 – Director General Li signed an agreement with Jerzy Bogdan Plewa, Director General for Agriculture and Rural Development, on agribusiness in the ACP countries. It focuses on developing technical exchanges and cooperation on agro-industrial policies; fostering private sector investment in agribusiness and agro-industrial value chains; encouraging business linkages, matchmaking between Africa and EU in the area of agribusiness; promoting value adding activities, including value adding schemes and increased export through capacity building, knowledge sharing and training; and increasing the interaction in the area of food quality norms and standards.
BRUSSELS, 16 June 2016 – With Jyrki Katainen, Vice President for Jobs, Growths, Investments and Competitiveness, Director General Li discussed new EU initiatives for migration, including a EUR 3 billion investment plan that should leverage EUR 31 billion for de-risking in partner countries. Possible joint activities in Ethiopia, an EU priority country, and in other regions were also discussed, as well as possible cooperation in support of the globalization of the circular economy.
BRUSSELS, 16 June 2016 – With Lotte Knudsen, Managing Director, UN and Global Affairs, EU External Action Service, Director General Li spoke about UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnerships approach, as well as about migration, and ways to attract FDI. He also brought the example UNIDO projects in Ethiopia, Sudan and Turkey, saying that they contributed to supporting new EU migration-related initiatives.
BRUSSELS, 16 June 2016 – Ways for the public and private sectors to accelerate sustainable development were today the focus of a discussion at the annual European Development Days (EDD) taking place in Brussels. Speaking at the event, Director General Li, underlined the importance of partnerships, including with the private sector, for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He also emphasized the role of inclusive and sustainable industrial development in eradicating poverty, and for job creation and wealth generation.
BRUSSELS, 15 June 2016 – Director General Li attended the SE4ALL Advisory Board meeting along with world leaders including Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, as well as heads of State and ministers of energy and high-level representatives from the private sector. He stressed that without ensuring sustainable energy for all, it will be difficult to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
BRUSSELS, 15 June 2016 – During a meeting with Ambroise Fayolle, Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), the DG briefed him on recent meetings he had in Washington with financial Institutions and at the Department of Energy. The DG also mentioned his discussion at the EDD16 with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia on the EU-EIB proposal to finance UNIDO’s programme “Modjo Leather City” with a combination of grants and loans. It was agreed to further advance joint cooperation.
BRUSSELS, 15 June 2016 – The Director General also attended a dinner at the invitation of Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, where he also met with Neven Mimica, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, as well as with Heads of State and Government, and UN agencies. Among topics discussed were industrialization, migration and jobs as a priority for African countries; UNIDO’s role in reforming policies and the business environment; as well as the PCPs as a model for economic transformation, growth and jobs.
BRUSSELS, 14 June 2016 – Director General Li met Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director General of the Directorate General for the Environment. They discussed among other matters, green growth; the circular economy as part of industrial policies; green finance, including sustainable investments, green bonds, and the end of subsidies for fossil fuels; as well as ways to improve resource efficiency and eliminate pollution.

SAN FRANCISCO, 2 June 2016 - The Director General spoke at the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial taking place in San Francisco. The Energy Management Campaign is a call to all stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, industry leaders, and other partners to use the ISO 50001 standard as a transparent mechanism to demonstrate progress towards climate and energy goals. The Campaign aims to achieve 50,001 global certifications to ISO 50001 by 2020.

ISTANBUL, 23 May 2016 – The Director General congratulated Daniel Kablan Duncan, Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire on the National Plan for Development 2016-2020 that puts industrialization as the key path for development targeting a significant increase of the MVA. The Ambassador commended UNIDO on its excellent work on the ongoing Japan-funded project at Syrian refugee camps in Turkey.

ADA event - Innovation as a global goal
VIENNA, 29 April 2016 – Director General Li took part in an expert discussion during an event organized by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). Titled "Get active - Innovation as a global goal", the event invited experts from both UN organizations and the private sector to share their views on how best to tackle the challenge of translating theory into practice when it comes to promoting innovative practices that help to fulfill development goals and at the same time fit sound business practices. Speaking at the event, the Director General said that "technology transfer is important for innovation and for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.

Signing of memorandum of understanding with FAO
VIENNA, 26 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong and José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of FAO, signed a memorandum of understanding which outlined potential joint activities in such areas as agro-based industrial processing and value-adding activities, including in fisheries and forestry; investment promotion and facilitation of private sector investment for developing agricultural value chains, and technical assistance services in coordination with public and private investors. Other joint activities are foreseen in the field of commercially competitive bio-fuels that are based on harvesting waste, residues, recycled or unutilized products from agriculture, fisheries and forestry. UNIDO and FAO will also support countries in post-crisis rehabilitation, as well as trade and food safety capacity-building.

During his mission to New York, the Director General participated in the High-level Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Signature Ceremony for the Paris Agreement, as well as a number of other events.
NEW YORK, 22 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong is in New York supporting the signing of the Paris Agreement, which was adopted by all 196 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP21 in Paris on 12 December 2015. In the agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and given the grave risks, to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius. Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and provides a roadmap for climate actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience. The Signing Ceremony marks the first step toward ensuring that the Agreement enters into legal force as quickly as possible.
NEW YORK, 21 April 2016 – Director General LI Yong met with Rachel Kyte, Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All), a global initiative led by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon to achieve universal energy access, improve energy efficiency, and increase the use of renewable energy.

BEIJING, 11 April 2016 – LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO, held a meeting with NING Jizhe, Commissioner at the National Bureau of Statistics. The Director General congratulated him as the new commissioner and briefed him on UNIDO's mandate which focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrial development, as well as the implementation of the Programme for Country Partnership (PCPs). Ning expressed his Bureau's interest and readiness to explore potential cooperation with UNIDO such as developing statistics capacity-building projects in the Least Developed Countries and personnel exchange programme under the framework of South-South cooperation.
