Aid for Trade Global Review 2019: “Supporting Economic Diversification and Empowerment”

1The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will take an active part in the forthcoming Aid for Trade Global Review 2019, which will take place at the WTO headquarters in Geneva from 3 to 5 July 2019 under the theme “Supporting Economic Diversification and Empowerment”. This year’s theme is of particular relevance to UNIDO given industry’s role in economic diversification as well as in creating decent employment opportunities for women and youth. Apart from participating in the opening plenary, UNIDO will be co-organizing the following sessions:

From Aid to Investment: Supporting Economic Diversification and Industrialization in Africa

Co-organized with the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva, the session on 3 July 2019 will discuss how Official Development Assistance (ODA) can best address key bottlenecks in mobilizing public and private investment to support manufacturing capacity in Africa. A number of initiatives - such as UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnership (PCP), TICAD-supported trade and investment initiatives, and the European Union’s External Investment Plan - will also be discussed.

Adding Value: Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development

On 4 July 2019, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and UNIDO will be co-organizing a session to discuss how robust quality infrastructure systems better position developing economies to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session will demonstrate the contribution of quality infrastructure to people, prosperity, and the planet.

With more than USD30 billion in Official Development Assistance (ODA) allocated every year to Aid for Trade (around 30 percent of total ODA), the Global Review constitutes an excellent opportunity to make the case that inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) matters in making trade more inclusive and ensuring that its benefits are spread further and wider. It also constitutes an excellent opportunity to review how Aid for Trade flows can better support UNIDO Member States in achieving ISID, notably in the context of the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III). Attended by ministers of trade and development, senior representatives from international financial institutions, development partners and the private sector, the event will attract over 1,500 participants.
