The Arab Youth Forum: An innovative approach to green growth and job creation in the MENA region

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport will organize the Arab Youth Forum under the patronage of Nabil ElAraby, Secretary-
General of the League of Arab States. The event will open on 31 January 2016 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. The official opening will be followed by a high-level Expert Group Meeting on 1 and 2 February 2016.

The Arab Youth Forum is part of UNIDO’s effort to support the achievement of the new Global
Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through its mandate of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID). The Forum aims at addressing key challenges which the governments and the nations of the Arab world encounter today, mainly the high unemployment rate amongst the youth.

The Expert Group Meeting aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Gaining a clear understanding of the challenges in creating green growth and green jobs in the
Arab region;

• Analyzing and refining past and on-going efforts for job creation for youth in the region by
stakeholders such as governments, the private sector, international organizations, development
partners and civil society;

• Identifying promising initiatives and best practices for education, training, entrepreneurship,
MSME development and employment creation in green industries;

• Proposing policy recommendations at the global, regional and national level.

The event will be attended by government officials, academic experts, United Nations agency representatives,
entrepreneurs, representatives of chambers of commerce and industry, members of youth associations and other stakeholders.

The Forum further aims at identifying adequate tools and processes to expand opportunities for Arab youth in green entrepreneurship in today’s global job market.

The event will also include two side events: An award ceremony and a job fair.
