Seafood Expo Global, Brussels

First meeting on GSSI Benchmarking Process

The meeting will be held between the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia (MMAF) and UNIDO in the framework of the Seafood Expo Global (SEG).

The GSSI recently agreed to include Indonesia’s aquaculture standard into its pilot testing phase for its Global Benchmark Tool for seafood certification schemes. Indonesia will participate in the pilot testing between April and July and lessons from the pilot will feed into the updated GSSI Global Benchmark Tool that will be launched in autumn.

Indonesia is joining the pilot along with seven other renowned schemes, namely the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Friends of the Sea (FOS), the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA-BAP), the Iceland Responsible Fisheries Foundation (IRFF), the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and VietGAP.

The pilot testing of the Indonesian scheme will be facilitated by UNIDO, which is implementing a SECO-funded trade-related technical assistance programme in the fisheries sector in Indonesia. The programme aims to strengthen the trade capacities of selected value chains, among others, through the promotion of sustainability certification.
