LAUNCH OF THE MINAMATA INITIAL ASSESSMENT IN MONGOLIA
The Minamata Initial Assessment (MIA) and National Action Plan (NAP implemented by UN Environment) for the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector in Mongolia were officially launched on the 20th of June 2017 in Ulaanbaatar. The event brought together more than 30 key stakeholders including representatives from Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry, and civil society as well as experts in the subject matter. The purpose of the launching workshop was to inform them on the overall scope of the projects and activities included in the development of the MIA and the NAP.
The launch of the MIA, implemented by UNIDO, took place in the afternoon and involved opening remarks by the Focal Point of the Minamata Convention in Mongolia and presentations by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism on the mercury situation in Mongolia and by the UNIDO project manager, Mr. Jerome Stucki. The project, funded by the Global Environment Facility, will be executed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism with support from UNIDO.
