The National Action Plan (NAP) for the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector in Mozambique was officially launched on the 8th of June 2017 in the VIP Grand Hotel in Maputo. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER) and chaired by its Permanent Secretary. The event brought together more than 30 key stakeholders including representatives from MITADER, the Ministry of Health (MISAU), the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), the Ministry of Interior and representatives of the academia to inform them on the overall scope of the project and activities included in the development of the NAP.

The project, funded by the Global Environment Facility, will be executed by the relevant ministries (MIREME, MITADER and MISAU) in collaboration with UNIDO and the World Health Organization.  The project sets out the activities necessary to improve the national capacity and capability for the management of mercury in the ASGM sector, through the preparation of a National Action Plan, a requirement under the Minamata Convention that will enter into force on 16th August 2017.
