Habitat III, or the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, is taking place in Quito, Ecuador, from 17 – 20 October 2016.

Habitat III is the first UN global summit after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. It offers a unique opportunity to discuss how cities, towns, and villages should be planned and managed, in order to fulfill their role as drivers of sustainable development and national planning objectives, and how they can shape the implementation of the new global development goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The conference will have the convening power to bring together all the actors necessary to achieve these objectives. Solutions to the complex challenges of urbanization can only be found by bringing together Member States, multilateral organizations, local governments, private sector, and civil society.

UNIDO is engaged with the UN family and leading players in the sustainable cities realm to support the advancement of the new urban agenda. In this context, UNIDO will organize several events on the sidelines of the Habitat III, including a side event focusing on the significance and potential of sustainable cities as hubs for innovation, low carbon industrialization and climate action, presentations on UNIDO's eco-industrial park programme initiatives and sustainable cities programme, and a policy dialogue on urban services and technology, as well as several networking events.
