Climate action provides opportunities for economic development and income generation. Today’s clean technology innovations will fuel the next industrial revolution and shape tomorrow’s global economy and job market.
With a robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, advanced and emerging economies alike can benefit from profitable business models that provide climate solutions, and further catalyze economic growth and sustainable development.
In this context, UNIDO leads the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) to support the development of innovate climate solutions as profitable business models, by empowering cleantech start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and bolstering local innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems and policy frameworks.
At the UNFCCC COP23, GCIP will be featured in multiple side events focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship and investment for climate solutions, showing how to strengthen cleantech innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems at national levels.

Starting with the pilot in South Africa in 2011, the GCIP has been implemented in a total of eight countries including, Armenia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Turkey, with the most recent launch in Morocco in 2016. Ukraine is expected to join in 2018 expanding the geographic reach of GCIP to nine countries. Between 2014 and 2016, more than 600 startups have been mentored, trained and supported across the participating GCIP countries, selected from thousands of applicants.
GCIP is a UNIDO flagship programme supported by the Global Environment Facility.
