Duration: 3-6 working months

Duty Station: UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna

Organizational Context: The responsibility of the Branch is to promote the growth of resource- and energy-efficient “green industries” in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, with the goal of encouraging industrial development that is efficient as well as protective of the natural environment. In addition, the Branch acts as the focal point within UNIDO for relations with the Commission on Sustainable Development and the Marrakesh process. The Branch is also responsible for maintaining and developing the global network of National Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs) established in cooperation with UNEP. The Branch coordinates its service delivery with the services offered by other technical branches, and by other relevant organizational units of UNIDO.

Tasks: Under the overall guidance of the Branch Director and the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, the intern will perform the following tasks:

1. Research the adoption by industry of cleaner and more sustainable production practices, methodologies and technologies;

2. Analyze the assistance provided by PTC/EMB in the environmentally sound management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and other toxic or hazardous chemicals used by industry;

3. Study the environmentally sound management by industry of its wastes and the creation of environmental services industries focusing initially on waste recycling and waste treatment systems;

4. Draft reports and perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification requirements:

a.) Minimum academic background and/or field of specialisation required: first-level university degree in Environmental Management or a related field and enrolment in a higher-level university programme.

b.) Computer literacy: Microsoft Windows, proficient use of processing tools such as Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.

c.) Language skills: Fluency in English required, good knowledge of another official UN working language desirable.
