The Egyptian Traceability Centre for Agro-Industrial Exports (E-trace)

The Egyptian Traceability Centre for Agro-Industrial Exports (E-trace) was established in July 2004 as a joint effort by the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Italian Cooperation in Egypt (Italian Egyptian Debt for Development Swap Program). E-trace’s mission is to strengthen the Egyptian food value chain by providing technical and financial assistance to ensure that, in terms of quality, safety and traceability, Egyptian food products are safe for consumption and do not encounter barriers to trade.  The actions taken aim at improving the conditions for workers and businesses, and in generating and equitably distributing export-generated income along the food value chain, thus achieving safer jobs and safer products.

Ministerial Decree 826/2009 institutionalized E-trace as the "Agriculture and Agro-Industries Technology Center", affiliated to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, with UNIDO as a strategic partner. The center is technically, administratively and financially autonomous and is aiming at upgrading and enhancing the efficiency of Egyptian agro-industrial value chains.


  1. Upgrading supply chains in response to local and international market demand through enhancing competitiveness, productivity and compliance with international standards and traceability requirements.
  2. Introducing integrated solutions to reduce post harvest losses and improve cost efficiency throughout the supply chain.
  3. Upgrading supply capacity by promoting group and contract farming and enhancing demand and supply linkages
  4. Improving competencies of human resources throughout the supply chain by providing customized qualification programs and supporting educational institutions to meet business demand
  5. Strengthening export potential of the agro-industrial sector by enhancing compliance with quality specifications and environmental requirements
  6. Exchanging experience and knowledge at the regional level on traceability and related standards, and transferring advanced technologies in the agro-industrial field.

Ongoing Projects

Increasing availability of high quality and safe food and reduce post-harvest losses in ACP countries: establishment of Agriculture and Agro-Industries Technology Center as an Excellence Centre for Traceability and Agribusiness Trade Development (August 2009 to July 2011, Funded by Italian Cooperation – Budget 600,000 US$)

This project will strengthen the Agriculture and Agro-Industries Technology Center as a service provider for developing countries to access know-how/best practices and training on traceability and other agribusiness development, trade and compliance solutions.

Pro-Poor Horticulture Value Chains in Upper Egypt (January 2010 to December 2012, Funded by MDG Achievement Fund – Budget 2.5 Million US$)

This project will rely on the E-trace infrastructure, with regard to technical expertise, software, e-learning platforms, and updated quality and food safety management systems to equitably integrate small farmers and agricultural workers into supply chains of horticultural products.

Upgrading Fresh Produce Suppliers (March 2010 to February 2013 – Funded by MAKRO, Dutch Embassy and Industrial Modernization Center – Budget 2 Million EGP)

The project aims to upgrade 800 growers in 4 production locations trained on production techniques, post harvest treatments, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and farming economics; 10 lead growers will be Global GAP certified by June 2011, and 200 farms will receive technical assistance.

Upgrading the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Value Chains - Access to export markets (Funded by SECO, January 2011 to December 2014 – Budget 3.9 Million US$)

The project will leverage the Agriculture and Agro-Industries Technology Center’s technical infrastructure in the attempt to improve supply chains of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP). Technical assistance centers as well as an export consortium will be established to serve small and medium sized growers develop brands and marketing strategies for exports of products.
