UNIDO and partners launch Arab accreditation agency to support trade

CAIRO, 12 June 2011 – An Arab accreditation agency (ARAC), which will assist countries in the region in acquiring international accreditation of goods and services, was launched today in Cairo alongside the celebration of the International Accreditation Day.

The event attracted over 200 dignitaries from Arab countries, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as representatives from the donor community.

With financial support from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and in cooperation with UNIDO, the new agency will strive to contribute to economic growth in Arab countries by improving the competitiveness and establishing confidence and trust in Arab goods and services.

At the launch, the Egyptian Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade, Samir el Sayed, noted the key role accreditation plays in socio-economic development and welcomed the establishment of ARAC as a platform upon which Arab countries can build and develop its accreditation infrastructure.

“Quality infrastructure has become a mandatory requirement for sustainable trade and economic growth, job creation, regional integration, the development of common markets, peace and security,” said el Sayed.

He  expressed hope that ARAC would soon gain international recognition and trust and would cooperate closely with organizations in other regions of the world.

The Director-General of the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO), Mohamed Ben Youssef, spoke about the cooperation among the Arab accreditation bodies within the framework of ARAC. He said that the more advanced accreditation bodies should help develop the less advanced ones along with the global cooperation of ARAC with the Regional and International Accreditation bodies.

The launch was followed by the inaugural ARAC Executive Committee meeting during which two technical Committees were formed, a Technical Committee and a Communication Committee to commence implementing an ambitious work plan.
