KAYSERI, Turkey, 9 December 2011 – The Turkish Minister of Energy, Taner Yildiz, today tested Turkey’s first hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle, developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (UNIDO-ICHET).
The Managing Director of UNIDO-ICHET, Mustafa Hatipoglu, and the Rector of the Erciyes University, Fahrettin Kelestemur also took part in the event.
Along with biofuels, synthetic fuels and electricity, hydrogen is foreseen to be one of the future energy carriers in transport and stationary applications. As an elemental gas, it does not contain carbon and its combustion cannot release carbon products into the atmosphere, rendering its use totally clean.
Minister Yildiz thanked the research team for their success, noting that “Turkey is responsibly making research on clean energy and transportation technologies.”
Hydrogen vehicles are expected to play a major role in pollution prevention and become part of the transportation system of the future. The United States, the European Union, Canada and Japan have been investing heavily in the development of hydrogen production, storage and use technologies including fuel cells, with hydrogen playing a prominent role in their long-term energy scenarios.
ICHET is a UNIDO project founded in Istanbul in 2004 and supported by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. Its role is to support, demonstrate and promote viable hydrogen energy technologies with the aim of enhancing future economic development, particularly in emerging countries.
ICHET has contracted conversion of gasoline internal combustion engines to use hydrogen and hythane, which is a mixture of hydrogen and methane, to a team lead by a professor of the mechanical engineering department of Erciyes University, Nafiz Kahraman.
