VIENNA, 15 November 2011 – The next Global Chemical Leasing Award Ceremony will be held in June 2012 during the ACHEMA-Congress in Frankfurt, Germany.
This was announced today by the organizers of the award, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
The Award aims at enhancing the visibility of Chemical Leasing worldwide, encouraging innovative applications of the concept and recognizing best practices in Chemical Leasing implementation, science and promotion activities.
Chemical Leasing is a service-based business model that promotes sustainable management of chemicals where the economic benefits do not result from the quantity of chemicals sold, but from the services rendered by the chemicals. The basis of payment could, for example, be the amount of pieces cleaned, or the amount of area painted.
”Chemical Leasing provides practical solutions for industry to become more efficient and green. At the same time it reduces the unnecessary consumption of hazardous chemicals and protects human health and the environment. This represents an integrated preventive environmental strategy and a clear win-win situation for industry and the environment,” said UNIDO Director-General, Kandeh K. Yumkella.
The Global Chemical Leasing Award comprises four categories: Case studies (companies), Consulting services, Scientific publications and Public relations (reports, media, brochures, homepage). The first place winner in each category will receive USD 5,000.
Since chemical products provide a broad variety of services (such as cleaning, coating, colouring, degreasing, etc.) the Chemical Leasing model is applicable in a multitude of industry sectors in large companies, as well as in small and medium enterprises.
In 2004, UNIDO, supported by the Government of Austria, launched its first Chemical Leasing project. And in 2008, the German Government also joined this global initiative. During the last years, Chemical Leasing business cases have been successfully applied in different countries and sectors around the globe. The results show that the implementation of Chemical Leasing has high potentials to enhance resource efficiency and contribute to waste avoidance and minimization in industry.
In 2009 the Global Chemical Leasing Award was launched for the first time and generated the great interest. The official Award Ceremony took place in March 2010 in Prague during the international ChemCon Conference Europe.
The call for application for the Global Chemical Leasing Award-2012 is open from 15th November 2011 until 15th April 2012. Organizations, companies and individuals worldwide are encouraged to apply. The jury consists of recognised international experts and government representatives.
