National Confederation of Industry Brazil hosts Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) Connect

SAO PAULO, 11 September 2018 - The latest edition of this international knowledge-sharing programme, the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), has addressed the transformative opportunities and challenges that the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) will bring to Brazil’s manufacturing sector.

“The opportunity the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents to industries and economies around the world is immense. However, to ensure we capture this potential, there must be collaboration between all key stakeholders in devising a strategic path for its implementation,” said Namir Hourani, Managing Director of the GMIS Organizing Committee, adding “As a platform for discussion and debate that will set the course for a prosperous future, we are delighted to be able to be visiting Brazil to see these innovations in practice.”

The event in Sao Paulo formed part of GMIS’ global roadshow programme, GMIS Connect, and took place under the auspices of the National Confederation of Industry Brazil (CNI).

In this respect, Carlos Eduardo Abijaodi, Director of CNI, emphasized that “We should not believe that 4IR will only affect a few companies. We are sure that it will be a universal movement and that all companies, regardless of their size and sector, will need to adapt to remain competitive. We are at a turning point. Losing the opportunities created by Industry 4.0 will be unforgivable.”

Alessandro Amadio, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s Representative in Brazil, said, "It is not a matter of discussing whether industrial policies should exist or not, but of thinking about new approaches to productive development, which, at the same time, minimize the risks associated with selective policies and ensure the role of the State in facilitating and coordinating."

The Brazilian event also featured a keynote speech by Carlos Magariños, Ambassador of Argentina to Brazil, who emphasized that “disruptive technologies and related new business models are changing trade and production patterns all over the world. Developments on big data, digitalization and artificial intelligence enable an entire new set of applications to life sciences and education. Thus we have to understand that we are entering a new era for humanity.”

GMIS Connect Brazil featured three panels of industry experts providing insights into how the digital revolution and technological innovation is transforming the world, economically, environmentally and for social inclusion, and how both, the private and public sectors can prepare for these changes in a way that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

GMIS is a joint initiative of the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) bringing together manufacturers, governments and NGOs, technologists, entrepreneurs and investors to channel transformative 4IR technologies in creating the manufacturing sector of the future.
