Director General Yumkella to receive 2013 Energy Efficiency Visionary Award
VIENNA, 27 March 2013 – Kandeh K. Yumkella, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), will receive the 2013 Energy Efficiency Visionary Award for his steadfast commitment to the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.
EE Global is hosted by the Alliance to Save Energy – a nonprofit coalition of business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders. Founded in 1977, the Alliance to Save Energy promotes energy efficiency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment, and energy security.
This year, the Alliance to Save Energy unveiled “Energy 2030,” the clarion call for doubling energy productivity by the year 2030 through action in three key areas: investment, modernization, and education. The 2013 EE Visionary award winners are each a frontrunner of their respective field, having advanced energy efficiency by leaps and bounds over their impressive careers. The EE Visionary Awards are selected by the EE Global International Steering Committee and bestowed upon recipients from different regions of the world (the Americas, Africa-Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Europe) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to this generation of energy efficiency and the next.
This year's award recipients are being honored for their work to advance the next generation of energy efficiency through the pillars of investment, education, and modernization.
The Sustainable Energy for All Initiative aims to achieve three inter-linked global targets by 2030: universal access to modern energy services; the doubling of energy efficiency; and the doubling of the share of renewable energy in the world’s energy mix.
In 2012, Yumkella was appointed UN Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All and chief executive of the initiative. World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim and Secretary-General Ban co-chair the initiative’s newly formed Advisory Board.
Yumkella is to receive the award at the 2013 Energy Efficiency Global Forum taking place from the 20 to 21 May in Washington, D.C.
