Supporting industrial policy development in the Southern African Development Community
JOHANNESBURG, 19 March 2014 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is supporting the 10th meeting of the Industrial Development Policy Task Team Secretariat of the Southern African Custom Union (SACU) that opened in Johannesburg today.
UNIDO is participating in the two-day event as part of a recent agreement with SACU on providing expert advice and quality assurance in the process leading to the formulation of the first SACU regional industrial policy.
“Over the last few years, UNIDO has been involved in the formulation of a regional industrial framework for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as for the validation of the regional industrial strategy for the East African Community (EAC), and is currently negotiating its engagement in the implementation of the latter,” said Michele Clara, Programme Coordinator of UNIDO’s Research and Policy Advice Group.
He added that in the course of 2014, UNIDO will continue its engagement with the SACU Secretariat, and at the end of the year a regional policy is expected to be presented to the SACU Council of Ministers of Industry.
