Supporting the fourth global review of the aid for trade initiative
VIENNA, 5 July 2013 - The Fourth Global Review, to be held at the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) headquarters in Geneva from 8 to 10 July, will offer UNIDO and its development partners an opportunity to take stock of the results achieved under the Aid for Trade (AFT) Initiative.
UNIDO has supported the initiative since its early days, and is now one of the major implementing agencies of AFT-related trade capacity-building activities.
The Global Review will provide a platform for discussing experiences in implementing AFT projects, and help further strengthen ties with development partners and the private sector.
On 9 July, UNIDO, in cooperation with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and Japan’s Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO), will organize a side event. Titled “From standards compliance to shared value: making value chains meet development challenges”, the side event will focus on the interconnectedness of different elements of quality infrastructure (standards, including private standards, accreditation and certification), and value chain development.
The Global Review brings together high-level representatives of multilateral agencies, NGOs and the private sector.
The recently elected Director General of the WTO, Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, will start his term in office on 1 September. The Fourth Global Review will serve as an opportunity for the outgoing Director General, Pascal Lamy, to give recommendations for the way forward for the AFT Initiative.
