MARRAKECH, 17 November 2016 – On the margins of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), LI Yong today inaugurated the Greening Marrakesh platform, which aims to stimulate private sector partners to support green initiatives by providing technology solutions, as well as capacity-building and awareness-raising efforts.
The online platform was inaugurated during Li’s visit to the first energy self-sufficient public building in Marrakech, namely the Regional Directorate for Environment, which was equipped with energy efficient lightings and an energy management system, as well as with a hybrid wind-solar energy station supported by the Swedish Energy Agency.
The initiative which introduced low-carbon technologies in public buildings with a high potential for reducing carbon emissions was implemented by the Moroccan Government, together with UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
In total, four selected buildings implemented energy management systems to optimize the overall energy consumption, and installed solar PV parking shades providing up to 20 per cent of their electricity needs. The total energy saving potential of the buildings is around 125,700 kWh. The project already helped reduce the consumption of energy by 88,200 kWh.
Addressing the participants at the inauguration ceremony, Director General Li stressed the importance of forging partnerships to support the sustainability and scalability of the initiatives implemented at COP 22.
“Let me extend a warm invitation to the private sector to explore the multiple engagement opportunities available under the Greening Marrakesh platform. Let us work together towards further transforming Marrakech into a sustainable city that will set an example at the global level,” he said.
The Mayor of Marrakech, Mohamed Larbi Belkaid, the Senior Advisor of the Swedish Energy Agency Christopher Walden, and GEF representatives attended the event.
