UNIDO and Arab regional renewable energy and energy efficiency centre to jointly promote sustainable energy policies and technologies

VIENNA, 18 July 2014 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), will enhance collaboration in promoting sustainable energy policies, technologies and solutions in the Arab region.

The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding in Vienna today agreeing to share knowledge and expertise relating to industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

They will also work closely on disseminating best practices, providing policy guidance and facilitate cooperation between countries within the Arab region as well as other regions supported through UNIDO’s Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres. This is a  response to the urgent need for increased regional cooperation and a way to build capacities to mitigate existing barriers to renewable energy and energy efficiency investment and markets.

“We look forward to strengthening our partnership with RCREEE and further supporting countries in the Arab region to help them advance on their path towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development, especially through promoting sustainable energy,” said UNIDO Director General, LI Yong.

“This agreement is very timely and UNIDO sees a lot of opportunities to support RCREEE’s efforts to strengthen the role of small and medium enterprises in the energy transition in the Arab region as adopted at the 2nd Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in June.”

Tareq Emtairah, Executive Director of RCREEE, said: “The cooperation with UNIDO adds greatly to our efforts to advance renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Arab region, particularly in the industrial sector. Given UNIDO’s vast global knowledge base, resources and experience in the field of  industrial resource efficiency, we see a great potential for our joint cooperation as well as many benefits for our member states."
