Tapping into UNIDO’s regulatory and standard setting expertise to support energy for digitalization

VIENNA, 6 October 2022 - Drawing on UNIDO’s priority to promote low carbon infrastructure to power industrialization and its expertise in international standards development, Earth, Wind and Power (EWP) and the Organization’s experts agreed to work together on a Resource Utilization Efficiency (RUE) certification programme.

The exponential growth in demand for electricity to power data centre operations is becoming an important global megatrend - similar to digitalization in the public and private sectors. Developing technologies and practices to incentivize countries and businesses to develop sustainable digital infrastructure is therefore imperative.

"Both data and energy are important factors to achieve sustainable industrialization, and UNIDO will continue to be committed to support acceleration of green economy and digitalization. No Energy, no data, no industrialization” said Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO.

The RUE Certification programme will support the optimization of energy sourcing for smaller data centres. It will develop a methodology that will lead to carbon reductions using adaptable solutions suited for these centres. This effort will help close the gap in certification as whilst there are many certification authorities, none focuses on the use of big data and its demand on energy.  The initiative is in-line with UNIDO’s motto, “Progress by innovation” utilizing data sciences as its evidence-base.

"We are proud to have the opportunity to work with an organization like UNIDO on such an important initiative. EWP was founded to tackle the growing challenges of digitalization and increased efficiency in energy utilization within the energy sector by capturing excess energy from various sources and converting it into computing power. We cannot think of a better partner to establish a thorough and consistent framework to empower businesses and society at large to achieve a sustainable world” says Olav Skalmeraas, Chairman and Co-Founder of Earth Wind & Power.
