UNIDO and ESCWA work together to eradicate poverty in the Arab region

VIENNA, 11 October 2021 - The United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) have concluded a memorandum of understanding that identifies a series of technical areas for joint cooperation which include the development of agro-industries, increasing the participation of women and youth in productive activities, positioning Arab industries at the right stage of global value chains, and supporting small and medium enterprise development, trade capacity-building, and entrepreneurship development.

The Beirut-based ESCWA was established in 1973 to stimulate economic activity in member countries, strengthen cooperation between them, and promote development. It is comprised of 20 Arab States.

Through the implementation of joint activities, UNIDO and ESCWA will work together, mainly addressing poverty reduction in the Arab region (the only region in the world where extreme poverty has increased in the past years), for example by creating job opportunities in high productivity sectors and combatting the effects of COVID-19 in the region.
