UNIDO and Russia’s PJSC Norilsk Nickel to collaborate on environmentally-sound technologies

ABU DHABI, 4 November 2019 – LI Yong, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Dmitry Pristanskov, State Secretary — Vice President at PJSC Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel), signed a Joint Declaration to support environmentally-sound technologies in the metals industry.

“It is a great pleasure to formalize our partnership with UNIDO,” said Pristanskov. “We are committed to explore opportunities for joint initiatives, including the development of new projects aimed at promoting environmentally-sound initiatives and related capacity-building in nickel production and processing of heavy metals in our region, and beyond.”

“We see a great potential in engaging with the private sector to maximize the capacities of partners to foster technology transfer and ensure an environmentally-friendly industrial development,” said Li. “We are confident that the Joint Declaration will bring positive outcomes in promoting best available techniques and best environmental practices to tackle important industrial development issues.

Nornickel is Russia’s leading metals and mining company, and the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium as well as one of the world’s leading producers of platinum and copper. Founded in 1993, the company also produces cobalt, rhodium, gold, silver, iridium, selenium, ruthenium, tellurium, and sulphur. Nornickel is a member of UN Global Compact since 2016.
