VIENNA, 8 April 2021 - A virtual meeting was held between the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), LI Yong and Damilola Ogunbiyi, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General; CEO of Sustainable Energy For All (SEforALL); and Co-Chair of UN-Energy.
The virtual meeting was held to discuss the proceedings of the High Level Dialogue on Energy to be held at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2021.
The High Level Dialogue on Energy will be the first global gathering on energy under the auspices of the UN General Assembly since the UN Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy in 1981.The Dialogue aims to raise ambition and accelerate action towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) energy targets in support of the Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs and accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
The dialogue is driven by a number of champion countries and is structured into five working groups tackling various topics related to energy. UNIDO, along with co-leads the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Habitat, was invited to co-lead the thematic Working Group 4: Innovation, Technology and Data, the track report which will feed into a Roadmap for Universal Energy Access and Energy Transition, which will be presented at the HLDE in September 2021.
During the meeting with Ms Ogunbiyi, LI Yong highlighted the importance of the work on Working Group 4, noting its relevance to UNIDOs mandate, specifically as it relates to innovation, digital transformation and the 4th Industrial Revolution, as well as the need for reliable energy for industrial development.
The Director General reiterated UNIDO’s continued support to the on-going preparatory process and expressed his appreciation of the efforts undertaken by the Steering Group and the and the Dialogue Co-Chairs Ogunbiyi and Steiner.
