VIENNA, 17 June 2022 – With funding from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) developed the Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development (QI4SD) Index, which was launched today.

“The QI4SD Index was developed with partners from the International Network on Quality Infrastructure (INetQI) and currently covers 137 countries”, said UNIDO Project Manager Juan Pablo Davila. “The Index, which is composed by 36 Quality Infrastructure (QI) indicators that are clustered in the ‘People’, ‘Prosperity’ and ‘Planet’ categories, collects and publishes reliable data for all QI stakeholders; this is especially important since improvements in QI are necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

During the high-level panel discussion, opportunities and challenges facing data collection were touched upon, including by representatives from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); the International Accreditation Forum (IAF); the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM); and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

The virtual discussion, which was attended by more than 190 participants from 63 countries, allowed for additional key insights and interpretations of the QI4SD Index to be shared. Concurrently, a brief demonstration of the QI4SD Index website was given, and the report presenting the initial main results was introduced.
