YEREVAN, 17 September 2019 - The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will establish a new Light Industry Training Centre in Armenia, which will become a major regional provider of high-quality technical support services and training opportunities for national and international manufacturers.
“UNIDO’s experience clearly shows that an enabling environment with facilitated know-how and technology transfer is essential to sustain modernization efforts”, said UNIDO Project Manager Farrukh Alimdjanov. “The new Training Centre is especially relevant for light industry manufacturers who must always keep an eye out for emerging trends; the Centre will also allow access to a broader pool of expertise in design, business improvement and marketing for higher competitiveness and improved national and international market positioning”.
As one of the fastest-growing sectors in Armenia, light industry is becoming a priority for the country’s export-oriented industrial development strategy; as such, and while all necessary preconditions to move into standard-compliant production are in place, a sound capacity-building initiative will allow to unleash the existing potential.
“The project has seen an active involvement of government agencies, which helps to ensure that implemented initiatives are sustained”, said Alimdjanov. “We are very grateful to the Government of Armenia, which generously offered the premises to host the Centre in Yerevan”.
The UNIDO project ‘Improving competitiveness of export-oriented industries in Armenia through modernization and market access’ is implemented with the financial support of the Government of the Russian Federation and in partnership with the Ministry of Economy of Armenia; it has seen a series of enabling activities that helped upgrade technical capacities in innovative fashion design, facilitate networking between textile/garment producers, designers of ready-made clothing, and ensure the effective export promotion of Armenian garment and textile products.
