VIENNA/ISLAMABAD, 25 September 2019 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) announced that it will arrange for a trade mission of the Pakistani surgical cluster to South Africa, from 28 October to 1 November 2019. The trade mission is one of the outputs of a cooperation agreement between UNIDO and the Government of Punjab to develop industrial clusters under the World Bank’s Jobs and Competitiveness Programme.

The city of Sialkot in Pakistan is the largest producer of surgical, dental and veterinary instruments in the world; UNIDO and the Surgical Instrument Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SIMAP) are working together with an initial 11 companies in Sialkot to help them export directly, i.e. without middlemen. In turn, South African buyers and users of surgical and dental instruments will benefit from lower prices while gaining an appreciation for the expertise and technology behind both reusable and disposable Pakistani instruments. Medical students might also find the events in Cape Town and Johannesburg of educational value.
